What is fractional work, and who is it for?
May 09, 2025
For decades, 'work' meant full-time, 9-to-5 with one employer and one desk. But the times, they are a-changin'.
The world of work is shifting, not just toward remote setups or four-day weeks, but toward something deeper: ownership. This is where fractional work comes in.
What is fractional work?
Fractional work means working with multiple clients at once, typically on a part-time basis, in a role that holds strategic or operational weight. You're not just freelancing on projects; you're an important part of the business, but you still have autonomy and freedom.
You might be a Head of Delivery for one client two days a week, and a Strategic Ops Lead for another across three afternoons. You're embedded enough to make a difference, but not tied to one employer.
Think of it as building a portfolio career instead of climbing a single ladder.
Why is fractional work gaining traction?
Fractional work has been around for a while (although it isn't yet a household term), but in recent years it's been picking up steam. Put simply, we believe this is because the old systems are starting to crack:
- Full-time roles don't offer the security they once did (just read the news to hear about each new round of layoffs)
- AI is changing job functions overnight
- Employers want more impact without the overhead of full-time hires (as it gets more and more expensive to hire employees)
- Professionals want more autonomy, flexibility, and stability
Fractional work is poised to solve these problems, for employers and employees. It's strategic, but it's still hands-on. It gives both companies and individuals a new kind of leverage.
Who is fractional work for?
Where we differ from the majority of fractional advocates is that we think fractional work is for more people than you would think. Fractional work isn't just for C-suite execs, as many people seem to believe. You don’t need to be a CMO or ex-founder, and you don’t need a decade in the boardroom. You need skills, clarity, and the right positioning.
Some of the people thriving in fractional work right now include:
- Former freelancers who want more consistency
- Mid-level operators stepping out of burned-out leadership roles
- Consultants who want to get closer to delivery again
- Senior creatives, marketers, ops leads, and tech specialists
Roles that used to be all-or-nothing are now increasingly modular. That includes everything from project management to finance, delivery, marketing, and tech.
Is fractional work right for you?
One thing we're always keen to emphasise is that fractional work isn’t a magic fix, and probably won't work for everyone (some people are perfectly happy with a traditional 9-to-5, and that's fine). Fractional work takes discipline, clever positioning and branding, and a shift in mindset.
But, if you're:
- Tired of chasing one-off freelance gigs
- Not interested in full-time office politics
- Craving more control over your schedule and clients
- Looking to make a strategic impact without being chained to a single job
Then this model might be exactly what you've been missing.
